The English football club Portsmouth is based in the South coast island city of Portsmouth. The nickname of the club is Pompey, which is also the nickname for the city. This football club is presently owned by the Franco-Russian-Israeli Jew Alexandre Gaydamak. Portsmouth club was founded in 1898. The Golden Jubilee season of Portsmouth in 1948/1949 saw the club rise spectacularly and was tipped to be the first team of the 20th century to win the Football League and FA Cup double. However, Portsmouth crashed out to Leicester City but made up for it by claiming the league title. The season saw a record attendance of 51,385 spectators. Portsmouth Football Club

As in the case of most other football clubs, Portsmouth football club too has had its share of financial difficulties all through its existence. Portsmouth football club’s centenary season 1998/1999 only aggravated the financial crunch. A takeover in May 1999 by Milan Mandaric saved the club. In 2003, Portsmouth celebrated winning the Division One Championship and promotion to the Premier League. Alexander Gaydamak bought Portsmouth club in 2006 and with some record signings, the club finished in the top half of the Premier League table for the first time. Portsmouth has taken a rare step of releasing three new kits all of which maintain the colour scheme of the previous season.
