Gaetano Donezetti's two-act comedic opera La Fille du Régiment is set in Tyrol. When she was a baby, Marie was found on the battlefield by soldiers of the 11th Regiment of the Grand Army of Napoleon and was adopted by the soldiers. She falls in love wih the peasant Tonio by whom she had been rescued, but her fathers do not approve of this, because he is not a soldier. Tonio therefore joins the regiment in order to secure her hand. Suddenly the Marchiness of Berkenfield appears and indentifies Mary as her long-lost niece, taking Mary to her castle. The fun of this exuberant comedy is in the dramatic twists and the tuneful music en-route to the happy ending. "La Fille du Régiment" (The Daughter of the Regiment) is full of smooth melodies and animated music. sung in French with English surtitles.
