Henze, who is known for his extremely varied musical style, created the opera L’Upupa as a final addition to his extensive repertoire which included not only a total number of 14 opera’s but also violin concertos, symphonies, ballet music, chamber music, chorals and various arrangements. L’Upupa occupies a special place in Henze’s repertoire in that it is his only opera based on an entirely self-written libretto. L'Upupa Opera

L’Upupa, the title of Hans Werner Henze’s 2003 opera, refers to the hoopoe, a bird that was considered to be a symbol of virtue in Persia.This is in line with the general thematic structure of the L’Upupa opera, which includes elements of Arabian and Persian legends.
