Lady Macbeth, also known by its longer title “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District”, is the second and final completed opera of Dmitri Shostakovich, based on a libretto by Alexander Preis. The opera was first performed on the 22nd of January 1934 at the Maly-Theatre, Leningrad. For the libretto of the opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Alexander Preis has based himself on Nikolai Leskov’s story “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsenk District”. Lady Macbeth recounts the tragic story of the young Katarina who suffers from her unhappy marriage to the merchant Zinovy. However, she is charmed by one of her servants, the womanizer Sergei. After Katarina has murdered her father-in-law Boris Timofejevich and her husband for the sake of her love for Sergei, Katarina and Sergei are condemned to penal servitude. In 1936, ticket sales suddenly decreased as a consequence of Joseph Stalin’s negative assesment of the opera. In the Russian newspaper Pravda, Lady Macbeth was claimed to be “Chaos instead of Music”.
