Coca Cola Championship 2008-2009

The UK Football League Championship has a long and fascinating history. Established in 1888 by Scotsman William McGregor, the league served to structure the chaos in English football: players were bribed, for example, clubs didn’t draw large enough audiences because matches interfered with FA Cup matches, forcing clubs to take on unimportant teams, and so on and so forth. Initially a league was formed comprising two divisions. Due to its great success and the popularity of tickets, a third division was later added. In the beginning, Football League Championship matches were only played by northern clubs, however, around the turn of the century more and more clubs from the south -such as for instance Chelsea and Arsenal- began to join the League Championship. The English Football League has always been characterised by invention and innovation: in 1973 the two-up, two-down promotion and relegation system was replaced with a three-up, three down system and in 1987 the play-off system was introduced. However, in the early nineties a true revolution happened when 22 First Division clubs decided to split away from the Football League and form the FA Premier League in order to keep more revenue from broadcasting and sales of football tickets for themselves. The original second division of the Football League was called the First Division between 1993 and 2004 after which it was renamed The Coca Cola Championship in 2004. Sales of Coca Cola Championship tickets have been picking up recently and it’s not hard to explain why: the Coca Cola Championship 2008-2009 will be offering exciting, top-class football by excellent teams such as Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ipswich Town, Blackpool and Southampton!
